A few years ago I went to North Korea to write about the country's first, best, and only luxury ski resort, a story that made it into Best American Travel Writing. Before I hit the slopes, though, I spent a few days in and around Pyongyang visiting the sites we foreigners are allowed to visit, … Continue reading Miss Rhee and me

I wrote about growing up in Delmarva for @outsidemagazine and it seems to have struck a chord with folks, and for that I’m humbled and grateful. It took me years to realize what a special childhood I had. This is me, circa 1978, on Little Cobb Island, a barrier island off the coast of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. That island is long gone now. What the sea giveth, the sea taketh away. Please give it a read (link in bio!) and let me know what you think. Better yet, I’d love to hear your memories of being on the Shore. #summervibes #essaywriting #delmarva #esva #esmd #delaware #oceancitymaryland #rehobothbeach #delawarebeaches
Beards, boats and a covered bridge. #Oregon
We have some friends staying with us who have been on a five year round-the-world sailing adventure. They came back to Bend to send their oldest off to the Merchant Marine Academy and to sort through their belongings before jetting back to Egypt to teach. Over the years, with the rain and snow in Oregon, the container holding nearly all of their worldly possessions grew a quarter-size hole in the ceiling. The water that got in turned a good chunk of stuff into an unrecognizable mound of black goo. Blankets that disintegrate when touched. Books fused into one moldy mass. So many items they loved are so destroyed and rotting that they are almost soil again. It’s like they are returning to the earth. And yet there is something strangely beautiful happening too. They are a family in deep transition and after they let the sadness run its course they came to terms that it is all just stuff. Baby photos. Wedding photos. All gone, and yet… I picked up one of the many destroyed photo albums the other night and peeled the pages apart and I found this. It’s a photo of what, who knows, but I think it’s gorgeous. Accidental art by unwanted disaster is still art.
